Subject: [*] AliasZoo 2.0 submission
Well it's been a while, but here is the latest version of AliasZoo -
version 2.0.
This version has been completely re-written to add a number of new
features, and to standardize the interface to Apple's HIGs. Some of the
new features are:
1) You can now find and check alias files seperately. This allows you to
look at the aliases on a drive without having to actually verify that they
work.
2) The ability to automatically re-connect orphaned aliases - assuming that
a valid target file can be found. A valid target is determined to be any
file with the same creator and file type as the original target AND the
same creation date as the original target.
3) Much smarter handling of volumes mounted during alias resolve scans.
Volumes that are temporarily mounted will not be unmounted until absolutely
necessary (and then, the 'oldest' used volumes are unmounted first). This
means that you shouldn't have to enter a password for a network volume more
than once.
4) The interface is substantially changed. The window is now resizable, and
icons are used to identify alias states rather than colours (works much
better with gray-scale monitors).
5) More preferences have been added - including the ability to supress
resolving of local, removable, and network volumes independant of one
another.
6) Aliases can now be renamed from with AliasZoo's "Info" dialog. As well,
the icon for an alias's target is now displayed in this dialog (in colour
when possible).
7) The scrolling list of alias files now supports all the proper keys
(PgUp, PgDn, Home, End, and arrows), and allows the selection of groups
(shift-click) and disjointed selections (command-click).
8) Everything has been sped up a fair bit, and a progress dialog is now
displayed when resolving alias files.
This version is now being distributed as shareware by Blue Globe Software
of Victoria, British Columbia Canada, although it is still written by Cliff
McCollum. The shareware fee is $15 US or Canadian - with site licenses
available for $150 per organization.
Thanks for providing Sumex-aim, to all of us in the Mac community!!!

Subject: [*] ARA Power User
A friend of mine recently wrote this custom ARA script for his new
14.4 modem, and decided to put together this package for people interested
in writing their own ARA scripts. The package includes a read-me file
that describes how to write your own custom ARA scripts. I haven't seen
anything like this in the archives so I have gotten permission from him
to submit the package. It is a binhexed, self-expanding archive with
three files; The "Power User" MNP Linktool script, a text only version
of the same file, and a read-me that descibes how to roll your own.

** WARNING:
Autograph only works with Eudora. If you don't have Eudora, give up. You
also need System 7.
** WHAT IT DOES
Not much. It changes your signature in Eudora. You can drag and drop a text
file onto Autograph and it'll change your Eudora signature to that. If you
tell it to make a TEXT file into a signature, the next time you
double-click on the file, the signature in Eudora will be changed to it.
The idea is to have a folder of signatures, any which one can be
double-clicked on to change your signature. Oh yeah, if Eudora happens to
be running when you double-click one of the signatures, it'll switch back
to Eudora.
ENJOY...

Disk Charmer 2.0.x is a neat utility that lets you conveniently
initialize (or verify) floppy disks.
It *requires* at least System 7 to run.
It has a nice, modeless interface.
Help Balloons are everywhere.
It supports drag&drop (with the required Apple Events).
It is able to create larger disks: you gain 8.5K on a 800K disk,
18.5K on a HD disk (if you keep one large file filling the disk,
such as a Compact Pro segment).
It is the first disk formatter supporting the handy "Undo" feature
we all know and love.
It is the first disk formatter able to initialize and verify disks
(hold your breath) *in background*. To access this feature, you need
the Thread Manager Extension from Apple Computer.
It has even more features... but I am sure you are already impressed!

Do It All!
The Shareware Job and Schedule Organizer
Copyright 1990-93 by J. Christopher Bell
Version 3.02
Do It All! is a job prioritizer, to-do list, and appointment manager. You
can set Alarms for events, store jobs as Current/Postponed/Done, TEXT export
(use it to make reports of your Done Jobs), and more. One the basic jobs of
Do It All! is a "sliding priority" job, for instance "low priority now but it
should move up in my list so that by October 1st it is the most important
thing on the list". Types of jobs include "limited-date schedule events"
which cover events like "MWF, 10am-11am from Sep.29 to Dec.1". Job editing
and display is done with international time/date formats and even time/date
input via keyboard for all international [single-byte] formats! New "auto-
save" feature to save your joblist when you switch it the background or
after 15 minutes to keep your joblist information from dissapearing!
Shareware magazine says "Definite A+ for user interface design and overall
product usefulness. ... With its human interface and commonsense approach
to scheduling, Do It All! blasts past all other reminder [apps] we've seen."

PowerBook 180c Screen Tester
by David M. Meleedy
The Powerbook Screen Tester program for the 170 and 180 was
already written, but I wanted to have the flexibility to check each
element ( red, green, blue ) for my new 180c. So I wrote this screen
tester program which cycles between black-white-red-green-blue to test
the active matrix screen. You can also just flip between black and
white using the appropriate keys if you have a 170 or a 180.
Why test the screen? Well, there is nothing more frustrating
than dishing out thousands of dollars, only to find out that there is a
burnt out pixel in the just the right place to really annoy you. Before
you go and buy a powerbook with an active matrix screen, take this
program along with you to make sure the machine you buy has the best
screen possible.
This program is freeware, but if you really have a need to express
your gratitude, you can email me at:

p.s. if you happen to be in the Boston area, I always enjoy a few good
dark beers!

Subject: [*] Powershare
PowerShare 1.0
PowerShare is a shareware program that allows anyone using System 7 File
Sharing to control the amount of CPU time allocated to File Sharing.
Without PowerShare, System 7 File Sharing defaults to 50% of the CPU time
allocated to File Sharing. PowerShare allows you to allocate anywhere from
10% to 100% of the CPU time for File Sharing. Once you use PowerShare to
change this setting, it will stay at the new setting ... even if the
computer is shut down and rebooted.
By allowing you to set a higher CPU allocation for File Sharing, PowerShare
can greatly improve the performance of File Sharing. If you are using File
Sharing, you need PowerShare to get the maximum performance. If you need a
fast server for a small network, with PowerShare, System 7 File Sharing can
compete with AppleShare's performance.

Subject: (?) Another bitmap question
Thanks to all of you who gave me information about converting formats.
I feel I'm getting closer to a solution...
Let me be more specific describing my problem this time. My department
has a plethora of mac clip art in many different formats. My manager
would like to be able to take some of that art and convert it into a
format that can be used in 'X' on a UNIX workstation.
For the application in mind, graphics are expressed as a bitmap in
ascii form. There is a define at the beginning stating the height
and width, and then a series of 1's and 0's (in hex format) describing
the bitmap.
If I can convert the clip art into any sort of bitmap format, and I know
the specification for that format, I can easily write a program to
convert the bitmap into the form that I need.
So the question now is, what format(s) describes B&W art as 0's and 1's?
How can I extract the height and width of the art, and the 0's and 1's
>From the format?
Thanks for your help.

2 years ago when I bought my mac, a friend listed off all the current
macs, how they fit in the compute power pecking order, what expandability
and growth tracks they had, monitors, other benefits and drawbacks, etc.
Needless to say, this list is now dated.
Does anyone have a list of what macs are available, and how they compare
to each other? I'm interested in what chip is used for the CPU, clock
speed, how many expansion slots, the maximum amount of memory that can
be plugged in, other features of the machine, and ballpark price.
Ultimately, my department is looking for a workhorse machine that doesn't
have a whole lot of extras to do natural language understanding and word
spotting in text. It will sit on an AppleTalk network, and will need to
support a 21" color monitor. It doesn't need CD-ROM, speech recognition,
fancy sound or graphics.
How do the new machines due out (high-end and low-end Cyclone, Tempest,
and RISC based PowerPC 601) fit into the picture?
Thanks for your help!

As far as the movie animation goes, Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic was

Computer manufacturers (and others) now PAY to have their products
featured in movies. Apple has people who do nothing else but push this.
And movies are made to make money. There are no obvious commercial

So why all this hype about Macs featured in the flavor of the month movie ?
Wait 12 months and maybe you won't need to see it at all.

That's the only interesting question. It was Industrial Light and Magic,

I don't know how you can use the ADB port as a serial, but even if you
found a way, you will not be able to do so, since the Mac PLUS does
not have an ADB port! I know TelePort modems used to work through the ADB.
I have used the Axion Switch with good success to attach three devices to
my modem port. It uses an easy to use control panel for software switching
between devices. You would not be able to use two devices simultaneously,
as you seem to need. It might even work on the Printer port and you could
switch between the ImageWriter and the network. Or you can AppleTalk your
ImageWriter (if the card is still available.)
Good Luck, but first you might want to see if you can get a mac with an
ADB.

Subj: Help: Address database/conference tracking software?
Hi everyone,
Our secretary is finally upgrading her computer system to a Mac, but
her main concern is transferring her address database from her PC running
DBase III(yes, THAT old program!) onto the Mac. It's got several hundred names
on it, and she's not about to re-type them on the Mac...
We put on conferences regularly, and use the database to get the attendees'
information organized when they register for and attend conferences...
Essentially, she uses the database to enter names, sort by fields (address,
last name, first name, Company, etc..) print mailing labels (Avery forms,
etc),
and then print out reports that she will use as a checklist of sorts when
people arrive at the event.
(You know, "Hi, my name is John Doe from Apple Computer, and I've pre-paid
for this conference." whereupon she will search the printout that has been
sorted by last name, check my name off, verify that I've pre-paid, and give me
my name tag to wear so I can get in...)
FileMaker Pro was the first thing that came to mind, but I've heard of
programs
like TouchBase Pro and DynoDex that seem specialized for this sort of
thing...
Anybody out there used these beasts, or know of anything what will work like
that? And especially, _CAN_IT_IMPORT_DBASE_III_FILES?_
Worst case, we'll have to export the Dbase file as ASCII text, import it on
the Mac, and the parse the data. Time consuming, but it might be worth the
work
if the program works well...
Thanks!

Yes, I struggled with that little line of postscript code a while back, too.
Even though the AppleEngineer insisted that was the fix, it didn't.
But then the LW Pro's and LW 8.0 drivers were released, and included with them
was the "LaserWriter 8.0 Software v1.0" version 7.4.1 (I think this whole

I think you can ftp the LW8.0 package from ftp.apple.com. I could be wrong.

There's no reason why you can't. I've done it off and on... All you need is
the right connections. You'll need the plug for the back of your Mac, lots
of wire, and the right connector for the back of your stereo. You'll need to
run your computer's sound into the AUX IN spot on the back of your boom box.
You might have to cut up some of the wires and splice them together, but
that's
not that tough...
Good luck!

Subject: Ehman drive troubles
We have an older (bought in 1990) Ehman 45meg hard drive that has
been running happily attached to a Mac Plus. However, if we plug
it into a Classic II, there is no joy. The Classic II will not boot,
it just shows a Sad Mac. We have tried booting the Classic II with
the Ehman drive connected but powered off- no luck there either. The
drive still works fine connected to a Plus. All the machines are
running System 7. (There is no system software on the Ehman disk.)
The SCSI addresses don't conflict; the Ehman is at the end of the
SCSI chain (in this case that means at the end of the single cable).
Is there any hope for using this hard drive on a newer Mac, or must it
live only with an old Plus? The drive is internally terminated, which
is a nuisance but would not normally be fatal. Is this an un-fixable
hardware problem? A mysterious gotcha caused by ancient formatting
software? A common problem that everyone except me knows all about?
I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who knows a way around this one.

This is a design flaw in the original PowerBook power cord. Look at the
PBook end of the cable (the round plug). There's a black plastic
insulator that separates the two contacts, which is probably missing a
chunk. When the broken plug is inserted in the PBook, you blow a fuse on
the logic board. I don't know what it costs to fix, bit $750 sounds
awfully steep. Anyway, you'll need to fix/replace the power cord to avoid
blowing the new fuse.
BTW, Apple changed the design of the plug on the newer PowerBooks to avoid
this problem.

Don't use binary to download *.hqx files! The binhex format is specifically
intended to allow shipping of files (programs) in ASCII format. Sometimes
binary will work, and sometimes it won't. It will if you are lucky and what
comes in that eighth bit is what your machine needs to see, but there is no
guarantee of this! Try redownloading in ASCII mode, and drop it on Stuffit

HP is now shipping its version 8 drivers for its Laserjet line, including
an updated PPD for the 4M (missing from Adobe's collection). This is a new
PPD, not the one HP ships for using the 4M with PageMaker. You can order
the drivers from 303-353-7650. Be sure to ask for Version 8.
The package comes with a couple of guides, one to the driver and one to
the new "Laserjet Utility". The guides were produced with DocMaker. They
work like the documentation that comes with Andrew Welch's shareware
products (maybe HP is using AW's program).
The Laserjet Utility allows the usual sort of things: downloading fonts,
choosing resolution to print at, selecting printer language. There's
also an important addition, viz the option of printing "draft" so as
to use less toner. The manual rather uninformatively says that some
of the Utility's options may not be available for a given printer, in
which case the relevant menu item will be dimmed. Infuriatingly, for the
4M the "draft" option *is* dimmed. I may have goofed somehow in the
installation process but I don't see how, and the item stays dimmed
whether the 4 or the generic PPD is selected. I may have to buy Toner
Tuner after all.
Anyway, HP will send you all this stuff for free - not even the price
of shipping.

We have one of the first Laserwriter IIg's in our Department. It shows (and
always has) a few non-ideal behaviours, viz. (1) Occasionally, it prints
out pages which are wavy in a horizontal direction. (2) Sometimes, it gets
slower and slower, then locks, as if it's not purging its memory between
jobs. (3) Whenever I try using "the Font Book" to print out groups of
fonts, it goes into a hard reset after about 3 or 4. I mean HARD reset: it
resets its PRAM, so that the printer name is changed, and the PAGE COUNTER
SETS TO ZERO!!! Now, I mentioned this to a local beard-and-sandals guru,
and he said airily "Oh yes, I think there was a firmware problem in early
IIgs". Is this true? Are any of the faults I've listed compatibile with any

I've got a similar situation... a Mac at home and SPARCstations at work.
Over the last couple of years I've found a number of comfortable solutions.
I'll ignore the MS-DOS intermediate solutions.
The cheapest is a Mac utility called "suntar" that enables your Mac to read
and write standard UNIX "tar" (or "bar") format disks. The latest version,
as I write this, is 1.3.3. I've heard it's quite stable, but I don't use it
because of my second suggestion, below. You should be able to find it on...
sumex-aim.stanford.edu /info-mac/util/suntar-133.hqx
..or.. mac.archive.umich.edu /mac/util/diskfile/suntar1.33.cpt.hqx
The other route is to read/write Mac disks on your SPARC. I've got a
commercial utility, called Common-Link, that handles this job as an X-window
app. It'll read and write DOS disks as well. It basically displays a
double-pane window; with the floppy directory in the left-hand panel and a
UNIX directory in the right. Copying in either direction is a simple point
and click job. Approximately US$200, I recall. (1.44M format only, no 800K)

Interesting you should ask. I just got a couple of "MacVGA" adapters from
James Engineering, Inc., on the advice of the Apple tech support line.
James Engineering said that my particular monitor doesn't work that well
with the adapter, and their literature says it won't work at all. I am
very happy with it though, as for $25 it's much better than anything else
I've ever seen on the IBM 8513 monitor. ;-) Colors were supposed to be a
bit washed out. Sure, when you compare it to a real mac monitor, but it's
really NOT BAD and beats the colors on the 160's screen anyday. ;-) Much
better than I was lead to believe. If this is what you get on a poor
implementation, then a good match must be pretty darn good.
(James Engineering can be reached at (510) 525-7350.)
Besides, it's so cool to have 2 monitors on your Mac...

Subject: MacWrite Pro Slowness
I'd like to set the record straight regarding earlier comments I made on
MacWrite Pro's typing speed, relative to Word.
One person has pointed out to me that having a b/w Classic II may actually
be an advantage in using Word. Apparently Word takes a bigger performance
hit than most Mac software when used in color mode. I'm glad to know
there's SOME advantage to having an otherwise slower machine!
Also, I've noticed a curious behavior in MacWrite Pro that may account (at
least partly) for the impression of slowness. When I type a letter in
MWPro, the insertion point disappears for a fraction of a second, and then
the letter appears, and then the insertion point reappears. If I keep
typing in a steady stream, the letters keep appearing, but the insertion
point disappears until I stop to collect my thoughts.
In Word (and in WriteNow), the insertion point remains steadily visible.
The actual typing speed may not in fact be different: but the way the
screen is refreshed makes one appear less quick, less smooth than the other
two. In other words it may simply be an optical illusion. I'd be interested
in knowing if there's a well-known technical reason for this difference in
behavior. I'd also be interested in knowing if anyone's done any research
on these kinds of minute perceptual differences.

Well put. I firmly believe that Microsoft Word, et al, should have
the market share it deserves. What you think it deserves may differ
>From what I think it deserves, of course, but I currently feel that
it has more than it deserves on pure merit. :-)

Since I don't do presentations or any spreadsheet work at all, it's
not hard for me to live very happily with Nisus and ClarisWorks (which
I use for my spreadsheet needs, simple as they are). So even if Microsoft
apps were a lot better than the competitors (which they certainly
aren't universally), they don't meet my needs, so I don't buy them. :-)
The best program overall is not necessarily the best program for your
needs. I think it's fair to say that Word has more features than any
other word processor, and that accounts for a lot of its popularity
because people think it can do anything. Unfortunately, that's completely
untrue, and if your needs don't happen to coincide with what it will
do, you're sunk. Lots of people call Microsoft and ask for GREP searching
capabilities, and guess what, Word just won't do it. (And yes, I know
about Alki MasterWord's searching capabilities, but last I saw, they
still weren't even in the same league as Nisus's PowerSearch.) So
again, think carefully about what you really do, and purchase accordingly.
Just assuming that Microsoft Word 5.1a has 375 commands available
doesn't necessarily mean that it will even begin to do what you need
to do. It does basically nothing I want to do, so I don't use it.
Simple as that. :-)
There was a good quote in the InfoWorld letters to the editor section
this week.

you must endure the fate of a lemming."

not make this claim.

Actually, it's not that they are so big, it's their whol attitude
towards the Mac market. They act as if they are somehow above all other
Mac software developers, and that they have some mandate to be the top
Mac software operation. And to top it all off, they seemingly refuse to
follow Apple programming and Human Interface guidelines for their
products. As an example I point you towards the menu definitions in Word
5.1, which are so screwed up that Now Software couldn't make a
workaround for Now Menus. They had to make NM automatically disable
itself when Word is the foreground app.
>But if Microsoft do come up with something which is clearly better than
>the competition, they ought to be given due credit and (maybe) custom.
>My own position is that the MS app has to be A LOT better than its
>competitors for me to buy it
I think that more people would switch away from Word if some of
Word's competitors could come up with seamless translation of Word files
into their format, and this includes Word's imbedded tables, outline
format, styles, and hidden characters. I'm willing to let them slide on
things like Text and Voice annotation, but so far no one has come up
with a seamless translator for Word format files. MacWrite Pro comes the
closest I have ever seen, but even they it leaves out stuff, and
although it makes some attempt at translating Word's tables, it fails
completely, IMO. And this is the principle reason why I haven't switched
my office from Word to another program. I just bought everyone slightly
faster machines and larger monitors and hope that it tides them over
until either Microsoft gets their act together or a real contender comes
along, which ever happens first.

I received a lot of good suggestions. One suggestion was that
Radio Shack (Tandy) sold the caddies, but the local one here
thought I was talking about golf or something. The Sales_Thing
really didn't know what I was talking about.
Anyway, many replies came in today, and since the sources
were diverse, I felt others could benefit. Here are a few of the

They're at 800-765-8369, or you can drop Ciff a note at 71175.3152 at

From: "dlawrence" <dlawrence@arpa.mil>:
Try the Apple Catalog...I know, odd place for a bargain, but I've heard it's
the cheapest!

From: (Harry Hahn) <hhahn@macc.wisc.edu>:
The Apple Catalog lists a box of five for $39. Apparently this is a good
price. If you don't have the catalog, then order number is 800.795.1000.
The caddies are catalog #C1013. I would guess since Apple is peddling
these, they work with the CD300.

Thanks again, folks. Everyone who commented was a big help.

Hello again,
This is a "self-answer": I phoned to Microsoft in Italy this morning and
they told me that this problem is occurring with "fast saves" active.
I tried to uncheck the "Allow fast saves" box in the standard get file
dialog, then save and close the document then re-open it and the problem
desappeared. I tried to turn on again the "fast saves" feature and now
I've got no errors!!
I think that Word in "fast save" mode stores in a document last saving only
the difference with the previous version, so maybe 30 (!) customized styles
are too much (!!) for the first fast saving (!!!)...
Thank to everyone answered me about this problem,
Greetings
Federico
